The Mercury Transport (previously known as Grand Duke of Tuscany) sailed from Gravesend on 2 April 1784 carrying 179 convicts under order of Transportation to North America. By 14 April the convicts had taken control of the ship and put into Torbay where about 100 of them escaped ship. Sixty six of these where retaken by HMS Helena before they got ashore, the rest fled into Devon and the surrounding region where most were recaptured in the following days. The following is a list of these persons, many of whom ended up being transported to New South Wales

Dunkirk Hulk, moored in Plymouth Harbour, played an important part as a collection point for prisoners from various regional English gaols as they were assembled for the First Fleet.
